In both the books and the TV show, Jane is the one pulling the strings of time in her epic battle against the Beast. But one of the defining facets of the novels is that Quentin isn't an archetypal "chosen one"; he's a depressed young man who's thrust into the world of magic, rather than someone who's destined to save Fillory. In fact, Jane tells Quentin in the books that she's thrown plenty of other magicians into this meat grinder (as well as many previous Quentins).
After Quentin and Julia reunite, they put their heads together to figure out a way to join Quentin's crew. These scenes feel too much like plot machinations designed to get all of the main student-age magicians into Fillory, just in time for what we expect will be their face-off with the Beast. The show also somewhat awkwardly introduces Josh Hoberman, who is part of the gang from the start in the books. It turns out that Victoria, the traveler whom Penny saw imprisoned by the Beast, is a classmate of Josh's.

Following the success of some show called Game of Thrones, one of the more talked about fantasy book series that has been bandied about as a possible contender is Lev Grossman's The Magicians series. Grossman's novels center on Quentin Coldwater, a young man who heads into upstate New York to attend a super secret school for magic, where he becomes part of a league of powerful magicians; think SUNY Hogwarts. Rumors about an adaptation became all the more louder when the concluding volume of Grossman's series, The Magician's Land, was published last summer to rave reviews and a firm landing at the top of the New York Times Best Sellers list.
Here are my results from my search for the best novels about magicians. Twelve magical books that caught my attention and will eventually land on my nightstand. Books like The Magicians, the basis of a popular tv series.
Without warning, Le Cirque de Rêves arrives in town, a circus that only operates at night. Within its walls are two competing magicians, Celia and Marco, bound together in a high stakes challenge. When they fall in love, a love so magical it affects the world around them, their dangerous game becomes even more precarious. From the first page to the last, Morgenstern had me captivated with her seductive and mysterious prose. Her five-star book left me craving more novels about magicians.
In THE MAGICIANS, Quentin Coldwater is a clinically depressed student on the verge of college graduation whose fantasy life provides him little comfort as he faces down adulthood. Part of growing up, he explains, is "selling the comic book collection and getting serious." Inward, nerdy Quentin is overjoyed to discover that his grad school interview is actually a test to join the exclusive Brakebills school for magicians. He passes with distinction, but his best friend Julia isn't so lucky. After flunking it, she desperately seeks to hone her magic outside the Ivy leagues. Back at Brakebills, Quentin flourishes -- but also unwittingly helps a malevolent force known only as the Beast gain entry to the magical campus, leading to the murder of a teacher. The ensuing fallout will test Quentin and his new Brakebills compatriots.
Dubbed "a Harry Potter for grownups" by some, The Magicians is based on the Lev Grossman novels of the same name and is about a secret school for upstart magicians. Not rabbit-out-of-the-hat pseudo-sorcerers, but real, honest-to-goodness magic-doers. 2ff7e9595c
